The Best Internet Resources

  • Romexplorer - An extensive directory of Rome-related web resources, well-organized by logical categories. In fact one of the best we've seen. As well some original material including news, tips, message board and the like.
  • TimeOut: Rome: Sightseeing - Extensive information on Rome's sights, well-organized.
  • Enjoy Rome - Run by a tourist service agency in Rome, so not the "tourist office" they'd like you to believe. Nonetheless, much helpful information ... if they keep it up to date.
  • Historical Weather - Average highs/lows/precip by month.
  • The Paulist Fathers - Church of Santa Susanna -- As you may know Santa Susanna is the (English speaking) American Parish in Rome. Lots of helpful information here for English-speaking visitors to Rome (and others as well) including tips for tourists, convents as alternatives to hotels, info on seeing the Pope ... more.
  • ScalaReale - A not for profit cultural association   specializing in architectural and historical tours of Rome, operated by an American. Their tours are as good value-for-money as you can find traveling anywhere. Also a source of information on museum hours, recommended restaurants and hotels and current special exhibits, concerts and the like.
  • Roma2000 Museums and Monuments Synopsis of contents, map location, buses, hours and prices for many of the city's attractions.
  • The Eternal Tourist Professional guide services by one of the very few Americans with an official guiding license.
  • La Professora - Travel Bits and Tidbits - The extensive homepages of a veteran of travels to Rome. A bit hard to navigate, but you'll be glad you visited.
  • Subway (Metropolitana) Map
  • Welcome in Rome - Info on museums, itineraries, sights, transport. Thin but useful information. Most useful: Fairly detailed city maps. Also see the ATAC InfoPoint site below.
  • Italy Hotel Reservations - You'll find, under Rome for example, that not all hotels are listed, but you'll probably find the hotel you want using the search function.
  • Rome Hotel Listings - Incomplete but helpful -- some online.
  • Rome Airport Facilities: Fiumicino (Leonardo DaVinci) - Just about all you could want to know about what's located where, including ATMs (cash points) and currency exchange booths.
  • ATAC - The Rome bus authority; info on tickets and passes, in Italian.
  • ATAC InfoPoint - ATAC also operates a mapping and address lookup service. Find your hotel or your destination.
  • Italian Tourist Web Guide (ITWG) -- A selection of useful information for visitors to Italy.
  • All Roads Lead to Roma - Particularly good sections on the Vatican and Environs and Churches and Basilicas, and much more. You'll find the extensive detail a good companion to TWEnJ's more-opinionated pages.
  • Official Site of Italian Rail
  • Lonely Planet Rome & Italy
  • Rick Steves' Best of Italy
  • US Department of State - Briefing Notes - Italy - If it's useful for official travelers, you'll find it useful as well.
