Web Resources

We've collected what we think are the most-generally useful links in starting your plans for a European adventure (principally those important to our favorite destinations). As extensive as Internet travel information may have become, books are still our ... and we suggest, your ... best source of in-depth travel information.

Rail/Bus/Boat Schedules and Fares

Both the Swiss and German rail servers provide thorough schedule coverage throughout Europe.

  • Swiss Rail/Boat/Bus/Mountain Timetables Instant Swiss schedules and internal fares. It also has complete schedules between Switzerland and other countries, and many internal schedules for bordering states.
  • German Rail  Domestic schedules and fares, and international routes.
  • Official Site of Italian Rail
  • SNCF Timetables French rails have joined the Internet parade.
  • Eurostar (Chunnel) Fares and schedules.
  • Mercurio - European National Railways and Timetables A comprehensive source of European rail servers and railfan resources.
  • RailEurope "Representative" schedules and fares for the most popular routes. Fares appear higher here, and at site below, than you'd pay in Europe.
  • Europe by Eurail One of many sources of passes, tickets and information.
  • RailSaver.com Tell it where you're going and it will price out a rail pass or separate tickets for each leg. A bit fussy to use, and particular and peculiar when it comes to place names. (For example, it doesn't recognize Zürich, preferring Zurich instead.) No sign on the site as to who provides it; probably an offshoot of RailConnection. In a small amount of testing it appears to be reasonably accurate. However it does want to sell a SwissPass in the US for $160 when it can be purchased in Switzerland for about 15% less.

Cars

  • Europe for Visitors Excellent information on driving in Europe. Click on the Cars/Motor Travel link on the home page.
  • AutoEurope Check car rental rates; book by e-mail. Claim to match anyone's price. Postings on rec.travel.europe generally report quite satisfactory experience, matching ours.
  • Avis Check rates and make reservations online.
  • Hertz
  • European Road Signs An incomplete (and somewhat confusing) tutorial on road signs and rules. Nonetheless worthwhile for those unfamiliar with the (right) way the rest of the world marks roads.
  • moto.europa The online guide provides a good introduction to most aspects of driving in Europe.
  • Britain's AA European fuel prices.
  • Michelin Felt by many to be the best European route planner
  • Mappy: Road Guide One of the best online route planners.
  • reiseroute.de Offers several choices of European routing planners.

Internet Searches

Our favorite research resource is the Google, a 'metasearch' facility. It's rare that we can't come up with a useful site in the first half dozen entries on the response page. (Google was selected as the PC Magazine Editors Choice of search engines in the December 5, 2000 issue.) Secondary resources are AltaVista and Yahoo. You should also try other metasearch engines (these use multiple search databases) like Intelliseek and Fast Search.

Weather

  • The Weather Underground Our favorite weather site. Includes five day forecasts and day by day weather history ... you can see what the weather was like last year (or earlier) on the dates you'll be visiting - hour by hour. Far better, if you look at several years, than the "high/low-for-the-month" that most sites give you. Look for "Historical Conditions" toward the bottom left.
  • CNN - Weather: World Forecasts
  • Historical Weather Average daily highs/lows and precipitation by month.
  • USA Today Weather Despite the publication's name, it does carry European weather.
  • Weather Site dot Com Seemingly an extension (or vice versa) of Wunderground. Easier to use in some cases, as for example checking International weather without knowing what cities are in the database.
  • WorldClimate Maintains historical weather for many points not covered by the Historical Weather site, as for example Luzern,  or the Jungfraujoch.

Bookstores

  • Amazon.com Leader in books on the Internet; 2.5 million titles in the catalog, good discounts, secure credit card transactions, speedy delivery. What more could you want? 0ur Amazon-affiliated bookstore is stocked with our personal recommendations on the best books to plan and enjoy travel to Europe.
  • Adventurous Traveler Bookstore Hard-to-find books and maps, especially those focused on outdoor adventure -- the source of books you can't find anywhere else.
  • Nations! Travel Mall An excellent collection of travel books/maps as well as travel accessories. Small discounts but free shipping in the US.
