The most important things to know about your hotel in Rome?

Location, location, location.

You want to be near sights, transportation and restaurants. You may want to drop by the room for a midday catnap. You should avoid hotels not in the historic center.

If you've not been to Europe before, or especially Rome, we've put together our thoughts on Choosing A Hotel In Rome. You'll also find Tips and Tricks in Selecting a Hotel in Rome helpful. Finally, the 'net is great for finding hotel recomendations. Is it the best way to book them? Our answer may surprise you ... read Booking Hotels on the Internet - which also has quite helpful information on how properly to confirm your hotel booking.

warning.gif (151 bytes)Dialing Italy

For all numbers listed, precede, from the US, with 011. The method of dialing numbers in and to Italy changed in mid-1998.  If you need help with phoning or faxing a hotel we have some helpful information.

If the person answering the phone isn't speaking English the following may be helpful to you:

Do you speak English?

Does anyone there speak English?

Italian Parla inglese?
par'-lah een-glay'-zee
C'è qualcuno là che parla inglese?
chay kwawl-koo'-no lah' kay par'la een-glay'-zee

Italian hotels, especially small ones, are notorious for responding slowly, and often do not respond at all if they have no space. Particularly if your lead time is short, call or fax. See Finding and Booking Hotels on the Internet.

Location is the most important factor, for us, in choosing a hotel. You'll may find ATAC's address finder and mapping site a useful tool.

Our Recommendations

-- these are the hotels we've used that we think you might enjoy
-- prices in Italian lire (ITL) and approximate euros (EUR)

Check today's exchange rate
-- unless noted, prices are per room for a 'double'
-- assure when you book you understand whether the rate quoted is per room or per person, with or without meals
-- most prices in Rome will not include breakfast or any other meals, with exceptions
-- some hotels update prices infrequently
so you should consider prices below as 'representative'
-- see our hotel information page if you have questions about hotel terms like EP, MAP, half-pension, American plan, stars, moderate first class, superior deluxe or single, double, triple, twin, quad, etc.

warning.gif (151 bytes)We urge caution in booking hotels requiring a cash or check deposit. A recent reader booked the La Residenza. It's a long story involving the hotel's understanding of written English, slow Italian mail and the hotel's inability to use the Internet well. The traveler was confirmed and unconfirmed by the hotel and lost a significant part of his deposit due to unreasonably high exchange charges. Problems rarely arise, but when they do ...
We don't understand why hotels taking credit cards don't accept them for deposits.
Alternatives in the same price class and quality:
Hotel Santa Chiara
Hotel Genio
Both are described more fully in Hotels Recommended by Others.

La Residenza (VV), bullet_star.gif (78 bytes)bullet_star.gif (78 bytes)bullet_star.gif (78 bytes)bullet_star.gif (78 bytes) via Emilia, 22 about $170 double (ITL325,000 to 340,000) (EUR168-176). (Junior suite @ ITL375,000 - 390,000) (EUR194-202). 20% discount on weekends offseason, two nights, Saturday to Monday. Phone 39-06-474-4480 and 39-06-488-0789, fax 485 721. {Not to be confused with the Hotel Residence}. Our favorite (only 28 rooms - bookings very difficult). Restored villa. Negative: requires check or cash advance deposit.

Lots of wood, fine rugs, antiques; walls on the guest room floors covered with fine wallpaper and old etchings of Rome sights. Pleasant, helpful staff. Redecorated rooms renovated about 1986-7. Smallish (European size) rooms. (A few larger, one or two cramped.) Good location two blocks from main part of via Veneto. Front desk staff accommodating. We love it. Popular with knowledgeable Europeans, now many Americans as well.

Price includes breakfast (fairly unusual in Rome), and the breakfast is an 'American breakfast buffet', (includes eggs and bacon) rare indeed in Italy. Lounges and an 'American bar' to facilitate planning the next day's acvities after dinner. One of the better buys in Europe, and as good a value as one can get in Rome. Reserve early as it's often sold out three months in advance.

St. Regis Grand, Rome bullet_star.gif (78 bytes)bullet_star.gif (78 bytes)bullet_star.gif (78 bytes)bullet_star.gif (78 bytes)bullet_star.gif (78 bytes) (an odd location, fairly near the main train station (Stazione Termini)), via Vittorio Orlando, 3  - EUR500+
phone 39-06-47091, fax 39-06-474-7307 Also arguably the best. Excellent. Location satsifactory, but not great. Underwent a thorough renovation in 1999.

Excelsior bullet_star.gif (78 bytes)bullet_star.gif (78 bytes)bullet_star.gif (78 bytes)bullet_star.gif (78 bytes)bullet_star.gif (78 bytes) (VV), via Veneto, 125 ITL450,000-774,000 (EUR233-400)
phone 39-06-47081  fax 39-06-4826205. Used to be the best. Recently renovated. Headquarters of The Gestapo during war. Great location on via Veneto. Now a Westin affiliate. Some evidence it is becoming less popular, and obtaining much of its business from groups and cruises.

Jolly Hotel Via Veneto bullet_star.gif (78 bytes)bullet_star.gif (78 bytes)bullet_star.gif (78 bytes)bullet_star.gif (78 bytes) (VV), Corso d'Italia, 1 ITL480,000-520,000  (EUR248-269)
phone 39-06-8495 fax 39-06-8841104. Relatively new (perhaps 1988 - but new for Rome) decent location at the edge of the large park at the end of the Via Veneto. Smallish (typical for Europe, especially modern) rooms. Often better price deals available, especially on weekends.

Sofitel bullet_star.gif (78 bytes)bullet_star.gif (78 bytes)bullet_star.gif (78 bytes)bullet_star.gif (78 bytes) (VV), via Lombardia, 47, rack rate ITL330,000-480,000 (EUR171-248), though special deals often available. Phone 39-06-478021, fax 39-06-482-1019. Fine location near via Veneto. Stayed at several years ago when it was the "Boston"; quite adequate to very good then. Seriously renovated in late '80s. We think the rack rate is overpriced.

Sheraton Roma, bullet_star.gif (78 bytes)bullet_star.gif (78 bytes)bullet_star.gif (78 bytes)bullet_star.gif (78 bytes) Viale del Pattinaggio 100,
Rome, 00144, Phone 39-06-54531, fax 39-06-5940689. Timewise it's roughly halfway between the airport (15 miles - 20 minutes) and the center of the city (4 miles and 15-20 minutes depending on traffic.) Good to excellent modern facility, though no different than other 600-room hotels anywhere in the world. In an industrial setting. Shuttle bus service to/from airport and center city available. City service infrequent and last trip back is fairly early. Cab to the city is perhaps $15. Comfortable hotel but certainly no feel of being in Rome; inconvenient for sights and restaurants. Excellent deals often available, because of location, and often used for this reason by tour operators and cruise lines. 'Rack rate' ITL400,000-542,000 (EUR207-280).

Pensione Sicilia bullet_star.gif (78 bytes)bullet_star.gif (78 bytes) (VV), via Sicilia. Right around the corner from the Excelsior. Phone 39-06-4821913, fax 39-06-482-1943. Great location. Decent value. In 1977 it was $22 for 2 persons, with breakfast. A little bit of roughing it, though fun if you're in to budget things. Price for a double with breakfast, tax and service included about ITL210,000 (EUR109), triples and quads available. Clean. And, by the way, they do have family rooms and it's quite close to the Villa Borghese park, so it is a good choice for families. (Haven't stayed in for several years, but a friend on a recent visit found it as we described and called the staff exceptionally helpful.)

Pensione Suisse bullet_star.gif (78 bytes)bullet_star.gif (78 bytes) (PS/VV), via Gregoriana, 54. Phone 39-06-678-3649, fax 678-1258. Compact and tidy, cheerful rooms. A good value performer. Staff extremely helpful and fluent in English. Double with bath and breakfast around ITL130,000 ('97) (EUR68).

In the low-cost price range we'd suggest looking in the recommendations of others (link below) for the Margutta and the Campo de' Fiori.
