World-Class Holidays

If Rome is our favorite city, Switzerland is our favorite country ... and will be yours, we'll wager. If there's one country ideal for the tourist, it's Switzerland.Muerren-Eiger-Moench

Stunningly attractive, Switzerland is a world leader in professional hospitality, and everything in the country works ... like a Swiss watch. Despite its reputation the country is not more expensive to visit than other parts of Europe ... in fact less expensive than many popular spots, at least if you make the right choices.

Book Recommendations
Whether visiting the mountains for picturesque cities and villages, if you're like us you'll want a guidebook. Fodor's is far and away the best for Switzerland. If you want special focus on the sights add a copy of the Michelin Green Guide.

You'll get the best Switzerland, in fact Europe, offers when you visit the Alpine regions. For us, Swiss visits mean, "Head for the Hills!"

Switzerland is a land of incredible variety. Picturesque medieval villages abound. The scenic lakes and rivers seem to have a special sparkle. The cities, while relatively grand, blend charm and comfortable human-scale settings. The rural scenes are perhaps the finest in the Western world. History has given Switzerland little land, but nature has blessed it with the finest natural sights in Europe.

And, despite our personal love affair with the Berner Oberland, there are other Swiss mountains. No matter what your travel tastes, you'll find in Other Swiss Destinations suggestions to satisfyingly extend your Swiss visit.

It's also a country full of appeal for youngsters of all ages -- Switzerland For Kids is full of ideas for places that will delight the younger members of your family.

Some visitors, alas, have only a few days for Switzerland. Take a look at our Suggestions For A Short Visit, or even One Day in the Mountains.

A Little Background

One finds four different language-oriented cultures: German, French, Italian and Romansch. Some cities are bilingual. One will occasionally overhear dialogues in which one side is in French, the other in German.

Nearly half the population is Catholic, yet historically it was a center of the Reformation, and the Protestant population nearly equals the Catholic.

More important than these divisions are those arising from the isolation of so much of the country. Natural divisions of mountains and lakes have made the land a grand quilt of unique cultural identities.

As one might expect, this diversity created opportunities for suspicion and strife. Despite modern transportation and communications much of the wonderful diversity remains today.

Yet, the Swiss began setting aside differences at least 700 years ago when they formed a confederation to improve the lot of all, while recognizing, indeed honoring, their individual group identities. The Swiss have set an example for the world of how differing cultures can live together in harmony. More than harmony, they've created a democratic nation that works.

The Swiss invented the hospitality industry, or so they claim -- with much justification. They continue to set the standard for competent, even caring, accommodations for the visitor.

With few natural resources except water they've used intellect and skills to set standards in engineering, timekeeping, power generation and transportation. You'll marvel at the bridges, tunnels, cables and cliff-hanging routes that you'll travel during your visit. It's enough that anyone could accomplish these engineering feats, yet you'll be even more amazed that they work every time, on time, whether in cities or mountains.

There are two principal mountain chains in Switzerland, the Jura and the Alps. The Jura is relatively ordinary. The Alps are the stuff of legends. There are three Swiss Alpine regions: the Engadine to the east and south, the Valais to the west and south, and the Berner Oberland in the south central portion. Zermatt is the principal destination in Valais; it's somewhat remote and not our favorite area, but one you may wish to consider. The Engadine is an interesting area, also a bit remote but with the advantage of somewhat more sunshine in the shoulder seasons, and somewhat fewer tourists. Our favorite place in the world is the Berner Oberland.

Head For The Hills!

The Jungfrau region south of Interlaken is 'best of breed'. Its forbidding mountains, soft Alpine pastures, breathtaking waterfalls and crystalline lakes will enchant you. The Alps embrace many scenic areas, but the Berner Oberland, and especially the Jungfrau region, has more easy access, more possibilities, a greater number of spectacular views, more convenient mountain transport and more and more-varied walks.

For us, Switzerland is its mountains, and the Jungfrau range the mountains to savor.

There's so much to do and see in the area. You'll have the vacation of a lifetime in the Berner Oberland/Jungfrau Region.
