Wine, Plaster and Timber

Have you sought a restful haven, a largely undiscovered, quiet and lovely village straight from the Middle Ages, a convenient base for great sightseeing, a cozy and inexpensive European hotel?

MarktplatzA vacation with just one of these would be good; if you're lucky you may find a spot with two -- but with everything?

In fact, you can have it all in picturesque Iphofen. Enjoy a relaxed European vacation with plenty to do and see, good food, and local residents who are surprised (and pleased) to see Americans.

Walk about the walls (atop the moat) on a misty morning while the church bells are ringing the start of the new dayIp-moat-100.jpg (4510 bytes) and perhaps you too will fall in love with this precious preserve.

Iphofen is a splendid moated preserve, girded by walls intact from the Middle Ages. It hosts a number of German sightseers every day, and usually one or more buses on weekends. Few non-Germans visit, almost no North Americans ... one of Germany's better-kept secrets.

Attractions? Stroll around the city walls amid the profusion of well-tended plum and apple trees. Enjoy the cobblestone streets overlooked by lovely half-timbered buildings.

The marketplace setting is one of the finest you'll find, with the focus dominated by the Baroque Rathaus and overseen by the spire of Sankt Veit, an example of late Gothic church architecture. You'll find in town a statue of John the Evangelist by Tilman Riemenschneider, the skilled and famous 15th-16th century sculptor.

Take a hike through the vineyards to the top of the Schwanberg.

The Knauf Museum has a fine porcelain collection, and the Kirchenburg Museum is almost within walking distance at the Iphofen "suburb" of Mönchsondheim. You'll gain a look at everyday life in the middle ages, clamber through workshops dedicated to the ancient crafts of rope-making, wheel-making, and barrel-making, all nestled in the fortified walls of a Gothic church. Children especially will enjoy the collection early tools, buildings, schoolhouse, bakery and even a rustic bowling alley, though most of the visitors when we stopped by were senior citizens greatly enjoying themselves.

Just an easy 75 minute drive from the Frankfurt airport. (See map.) Iphofen is within 30 minutes of the interesting city of Würzburg, 60 minutes from attractive Bamberg, both major centers of culture and power in the early years of the Millennium. The tourist mecca of Rothenburg ob der Tauber is only a half hour away. King Ludwig's Neuschwanstein can be reached for a, long, day trip.
