BooksWe've found Bavaria (Cadogan Guides) to be the most comprehensive, reliable and useful reference for the area. Michelin Green Guide : Germany (3rd Ed) Easy to pack and carry, it's essential in many places to enjoying the sights. The Germany edition of this excellent series is a little light in the Franconia/Bavaria area though providing more than any other source except Cadogan; the Cadogan Guide is preferable if you can locate a copy. We never leave home, or our hotel
room, without a pocket phrase book and pocket dictionary: While English is more widely spoken in Germany than in many parts of Europe you'll find some German quite handy, particularly in small villages like Iphofen. See Language Skills for a longer discussion of the usefulness of a bit of language prep before your trip. |
Rick Steves' Germany, Austria & Switzerland, 2001 covers Rothenburg and the royal castles well. Karen Brown's Germany Charming Inns & Itineraries 2001 The Globe Pequot Press - interesting itineraries and selected inns personally inspected by the author. You'll find selections in Iphofen and Rothenburg among many other cities. Her choices with which we have familiarity are excellent; be aware that while these are not five-star selections, they are above average in price. You can order these online through the links above, or you may be able to find them in larger bookstores (e.g. Barnes and Noble.) Links
