Dialing Italy

The method of dialing numbers in Italy changed in mid-1998.  If you need help with phoning or faxing a hotel we have some helpful information.

When dialing  from the US one has previously keyed 011-39 plus the "city" (area) code (without the leading zero) plus the number. (The area code for Rome and Frascati is "06".) When dialing between cities in Italy, the "0" was used, but not when dialing within the city (area).

Now, however, when dialing within Italy the full city code is required, with its "0", even when dialing within the city/area. This was done to facilitate the entry of new phone service providers who will have their own city/area codes.

While there was an overlap period, the new method of dialing has been required since December 18, 1998.

While Italian sources state the "0" will be required when dialing from outside Italy, some (or many) US phone companies provide a 'missing' "0".

So ...  be aware that to send a fax to, for example, the Hassler you should dial either 011-39-6-678-0001 or 011-39-06-678-0001.
