"We're flying from Paris to Zürich," the inquiry begins.

"We'll spend a day-and-a-half there, a day in Bern, 2 days in Interlaken, one in Geneva. On our last day we'll stop by Zermatt on our way to Milan.

"We'd like your help in how to spend our time. Also, we'd like to take the Glacier Express but aren't sure how to fit it in."

Familiar? Whether by car, train or plane, Switzerland's worth a visit even if it's not the main focus of your vacation.

But don't spread yourself too thin. We'd like you to see all, or more, of the areas we've enjoyed, but not all in a couple of days. The risk, always, of trying to see 'everything' in a short time is that you'll end up seeing nothing ... at least not well.

A pity to spend only a bit of time in this wonderful country, but take our advice below and we guarantee you'll want to come back for more ... much more!

(Have even less time for Switzerland than that? Read One Day in the Swiss Mountains.)

If time is scarce, we'd stick with two destinations. Get a sample of the country, and you're sure to want to come back for more.

For the best Switzerland has to offer, focus on the mountains around Interlaken, and Luzern -- unless you really enjoy spending most of your time unpacking and packing, checking in and out of hotels, and more time in transit than seeing and doing.

Geneva's a nice enough city if you find yourself there for some reason. It's not one we've ever chosen to go to on vacation despite knowing it well from business trips.

Zürich's a fine city, and one we think is underrated. Nevertheless, on a short trip to Switzerland we'd skip it. Paris, Rome, London -- great cities. Zürich's excellent, but not a premier destination. On the other hand  there are many worthwhile, enjoyable  things to do and see, even if you have only a few hours or a couple of days on a business trip. You'll find these sketched in A Quick Visit to Zürich.

Bern is a somewhat picturesque city, and comfortably 'human-scale': different than the kind of cities Americans are used to. It's not, however, uniquely special.

Luzern, on the other hand, is a special city. It's quite picturesque; looking, we suspect, much as Americans perceive a Swiss city 'should' look.

The setting by the lake and river is lovely; a pair of ancient covered bridges; colorful streets to walk; fine lake; several interesting attractions.

Covered BridgeThere's nothing quite like it in Europe, or Switzerland, and it's clearly worth a day or two when sampling the country. You'll find a synopsis of Luzern's attractions in Swiss Destinations.

Mountains (and lakes) are Switzerland's strong suit, and that's where we'd spend most of our time. You've got three main choices of Alpine mountain areas:

  • the Valais (Zermatt the most famous destination);
  • the Engadine (St. Moritz most notably, though expensive and not necessarily the best spot there);
  • the Berner Oberland.

We much prefer the Oberland. You'll find it's easier to get around, the sights are superior and the variety of things to do and see is Mountain Peaksgreater. Interlaken is 'okay', but we strongly suggest staying in the mountains, not outside of them.

Mürren is great, Wengen a good second choice; anywhere in the mountains offers more than Interlaken. Our page on the Berner Oberland gives a good overview of what's available in the area, and Visiting The Mountains will help you make the most of a short visit.

For us the mountains are best visited in summer, though the views can be spectacular at any time of the year. And you can even go hiking in the winter. Do be aware the weather is a little less predictable in the mountains off-season. If you're considering doing so take your sense of humor along and take a look at Timing Your Visit.

We'd suggest you spend at least a couple of nights in the mountains (we spend two weeks at a time) to give yourself some time to explore, and the opportunity to enjoy a couple of wonderful mountain sunrises and sunsets. Less than that available? See One Day in the Mountains. You can reach the area from most parts of the country in under three hours by train, less in most cases.

For an example of a well-planned and executed 8-day visit to Switzerland, see A Beautiful and Memorable Visit.

The Glacier Express is an interesting ride when the weather is good. And it is the best of the scenic trains. But we find it long, and frankly boring for the most part. You'll find our reasons and a description of all the scenic train trips in Switzerland's Scenic Trains. In short, though, we'd rather spend our time in the mountains instead of passing by them.

If you decide to ignore our advice, do check the weather. The spectacular views disappear on days when the mountains are shrouded by fog, clouds or snow.

Use Internet resources to plan your trip; there are many good references on the Web.

The Swiss Rail Server provides schedules and fares; you'll learn how long it takes to get between points, including services into and out of the country. For example, Geneva to Milan via Zermatt makes for a full day to say the least. You can 'do' it in a little more than 8 hours, though of course one might want to spend a little time at Zermatt in the process.

Swiss train travel can seem expensive on a per-ticket basis, but the Swisspass is an excellent buy, and usually makes public transport economical as well as convenient. We have some helpful information on traveling by train, bus, boat and cable on our Traveling In Switzerland page.

The rail schedule is helpful even to those driving; the country is full of lakes and mountains which turn short trips as the crow flies into longer trips for humans.

We've put together a number of hotel suggestions in various parts of the country, and the Swiss Hotel Association has a helpful site.

If you've only a day for the mountains, One Day in the Swiss Mountains will help you make the most of it.

Switzerland is a great vacation spot; take a well-planned taste now, and come back for more later.
