good base for excursions. If you want to pause in this region, consider Glion-sur-Montreux, sitting on a cliff above the city. You'll find a very good hotel with gardens, an excellent view of the city, lake and Chillon, and a fine table. We have an extensive article from a guest correspondent that will fill you in much more fully on visting Montreux and the surrounding area. Chateau Chillonmust visit if you're in the southeast: the subject of Byron's "Prisoner of Chillon". Not, by itself, as stunning as many castles, you'll find it historic and hauntingly romantic in its lakeside setting as it looms up from the water. (You can make a decent tour between trains on the way to Interlaken, and pick out reasons to return for a longer visit.) On Marktgasse you'll find interesting fountains, an animated Medieval clock tower, bear pit and market area. Good shopping and restaurants. If you stay in the Jungfrau region, Bern makes a good daytrip excursion for a break from the mountains. While Bern is famous for its medieval sights, it's less-well known for its fine examples of modern Swiss urbanism ... in fact an excellent example of a progressive European city. You'll find the guide to learning about his very modern hometown from Thomas Bolliger quite interesting. Continued on
