Thanks For the Advice

From: Lou Jerome

Our family recently returned from our two-week vacation to Germany and Switzerland, including a three-night stay in Mürren. Your advice, both in e-mail form as well as on your wonderfully comprehensive website, was very helpful to us.

Murren was extremely pleasant, with astounding views. We stayed at the Alpenruh Hotel: it was very pretty, clean, and well located. The food was good as well. The service was good, but it seemed just a tad impersonal. I told my wife that in retrospect we might have done better to stay across town at the Eiger, which you recommend more fully. Indeed, they gave us a good offer that was perhaps a bit more expensive than the Alpenruh's, but we made up for that with gondola fares! All that, however, is but a quibble.

We used a cloudy morning to head down to the valley to visit the Trümmelbach Falls, which were spectacular. That evening, the town hosted a folk music and dance evening at the Sports Center. It was very charming, and helped round out a very cloudy day.

Upon seeing clear skies at the top of the Schilthorn and the Jungfrau early the next morning on the TV, we caught the first lift to the Schilthorn, had a leisurely breakfast, and lingered at the top. Dazzling. We then returned to Mürren, walked across town, and took the circuitous (but eye-filling) trip to the Jungfrau. Had lunch there, went sledding, stomped around the glacier, walked beneath the glacier, lingered at the observation area. Did all this and got back to the hotel before 7 PM! In a perfect world we would have visited the two mountains on different days, but the weather did not permit.

We did take the funicular up to Allmendhubel, had lunch at the restaurant, and walked down, essentially through a cloud (limited visibility). We kind of forced that excursion, which no doubt would have been terrific with better weather. Overall, Mürren and the surrounding area was a highlight of our trip, and will remain a destination for the future for us-- there was much we did not do, of course. Thanks again.

Three Places I Think You Will Like

From: Don Casolaro

Restaurant - Dante Taberna dei Gracchi on Via dei Gracchi in the Prati section right near Hotel Cicerone - real Roman style restaurant - elegant and large - separate smaller rooms - great food at moderate prices - beautiful decor - mostly professional Romans dine there so you know it is worth it! Ask for Tommaso and tell him that Donald sent you.

2 Religious Sites
-Quattro Coronati Basilica - near San Clemente - ancient basilica and coister. St. Peter taught there. It is the real thing.
-Church of San Salvador in Undo. Via Pettinari & via Giulia (near Campo de Fiore) - the motherhouse of the Pallottine Fathers (the order founded by St. Vincent Pallotti, d 1850) - see his uncorrupt body under the altar of the magnificent small church - ask to see the crypt and his museum on sight - small donation to the brothers. Take note of the different pillars - taken as was the custom from pagan temples - church used to go under the water of the Tiber - thus its name - Holy Savior in the Waves. Take care and ciao!

PS - your website is wonderful I wouldn't visit Rome without looking at it, and I do at least 3x a year. You guys are the best!!!

Thanks So Much

From: Beth Herron

We've been back for a few weeks now, and I've been meaning to write to say thanks for all the great information on your web site and on the Fodor's bulletin board. My husband and I were in Mürren in mid-June for four nights and five days, and we are ready to go back. We stayed at the Eiger, which was just wonderful. The staff was great - the view, unbelievable. We took a few of the excursions recommended on your site, and enjoyed them all. We could have used another week to do everything we wanted. This site is a wonderful resource.

Iphofen, Bavaria

From: Earl and Carol Kloter

Thanks for the fantastic information we received from your pages. We just returned from two weeks in Germany and Switzerland. We stayed in Iphofen our first two nights in room #11 at the Gasthous Goldene Krone!! It was wonderful. Renate greeted us and showed us to our room, speaking very good English. It was like stepping back in time, so peaceful and the people so friendly. We only wish we could have stayed longer. We are talking of going again next year. The weekend we were there was the Wine Festival and Renate was the Wine Princess. So much tradition, and great wine! Thanks again, we really enjoy your travel tips.

The Oberland in April

From: Steve Newsome

My wife and I spent eight days in Switzerland in late April, and followed many of your suggestions. We stayed in the mountains in Kandersteg, though, which proved to be a great location for day trips to both the Jungfrau region, Zermatt, and even northern Italy. With our Swiss Pass, we were able to hop aboard trains whenever we wished, and I loved the convenience. The weather wasn't great (snow most days) but that just added to the adventure. In future postings, you might emphasize more the economy of renting holiday apartments. That is what we did, arranged through the Kandersteg tourist office, and it proved to be a great deal. Thank you for your many suggestions. Your web site was a great primer in preparing for our trip. Can't wait to go back!

Rome Visit Feedback

From: grh1@postoffice.pacbell.net

In getting from the airport to Rome my transportation advice would be to take the relatively new airport shuttle. When we arrived at Fumicino we simple walked to the Hotel Reservation Desk. ( A line due to people trying to book hotels .-10 min wait.) The shuttle leaves about every 30-45 min. I booked the shuttle and return trip and charged it on my credit card. Total cost for 2 people was $34.72 round trip!!! I believe it was quoted at ITL18,500 per person each way. The shuttle was a small mini bus. The shuttle left in about 15 min. and there was only one other passenger. The driver took us directly to our hotel and pointed out the sights along the way. On our return 6:30 AM our shuttle was already waiting for us at 6:25AM and made one stop to pick up another couple. Both times I gave the driver a 6,000 lire tip and thought that was being stingy as I was very pleased with the service. The airport shuttle website offers pre booking of this service but quotes a much higher rate. I would highly recommend this service and hope it become a successful business as it sure beats cab fares.

I was also very pleased with the hotel Domus Julia. It was much nicer than I had expected considering what I had heard on the Fodors' forum. I've posted about this hotel and answered several e-mail inquiries about it, but I am very reluctant to further publicize this hotel as it is a very small place and I fear I'll never be able to get reservations there again. It was my third choice behind Due Torre and Santa Chiara. No way I could get a reservation at either (2months in advance of trip.)

I was a student at the Loyola University Rome Center (Chicago) in 1963. Best year of my life! They have an excellent web site www.luc.edu/romecenter. If you haven't been there check out Rinaldo's cafe section. Some fun and interesting observations from the students. Changes that particularly struck me since those old days: Rome is sooo crowded now. By comparison we practically had the place to ourselves. Roman have a lot more money now. They are much more up to date. Very few Romans spoke any English back then.

Thank you for your web site and all your info. It really helped me in planning my trip.

Gerry

We Left the Tour With Our Mouths Agape

From: Bob Eells

I was looking at your site today, just thinking about our trip in November 2000, and remembered that I never sent you a formal thank you for all your help.

We had such a wonderful time in Rome and owe much of our success to you two, and your site. While I was planning the trip, I was on your site every day for weeks.

Our favorite part of the trip, we all agreed, was the Tomb of St. Peter and Excavations Tour (Pre-Constantinian Necropolis (Scavi)). Each one of us left the tour with mouths agape. Thanks so much for the heads up, as we were unable to find reference to that tour anywhere else.

We stayed at the Hotel Della Torre Argentina in center of Rome near the Campo di Fiori. This was one of the most accommodating hotels that I have ever stayed with. Since we were traveling with a small child (19 months) the hotel staff made our lives simple, often times bring juice and milk to the room at no charge. Our hotel room was bigger than most in Europe and well appointed and extremely clean. I would, and have, recommend this hotel to a friend. The location was great, we never had to take the subway or a taxi once during our stay, we were able to walk everywhere we visited. 15 minutes to the Vatican 10 minutes to the Forum/Colosseum 5 minutes to the Pantheon.

We have traveled to a number of places and I cannot wait to go back to Rome.

Once again, many thanks for all your help and for placing your success and failures on the web for others to learn from. It is sites and people like you that make the web wonderful.

My very best regards, Bob ... and Patty, Maeve, Patsy, and Maureen
