Switzerland

2001 - A Swiss Odyssey
by Carl Reid and Rebecca Pattinson

Thanks for a great site. We consulted it extensively before our 8 day Swiss trip (6-13 February, 2001).

Mürren was everything you said it was ... and much more. We stayed at the Eiger Guesthouse for 5 nights and the Hotel Eiger on our final night in the mountains. Both were excellent and Veronique & Annelis were charming hostesses.

A brief itinerary:

Day 1 Arrival & lots of snow!

Nothing prepares you for that Lauterbrunnen - Grütschalp - Mürren journey! Wow! Who put the 'fun' in funicular, though? But you do get used to it, after all, it's almost the only way up or down! Actually, one can also take the cable from Stechelberg to Mürren, via Gimmelwald. Less convenient, not as much fun nor as scenic as the Grütschalp route.

Day 2 Exploring Mürren & Gimmelwald.

Walter's Hotel Mittaghorn in Gimmelwald appeared to be boarded up. We later learned that Walter has been closing in winter these last several years. As well, he is having knee surgery. Expects be recovered and have the hotel open again sometime in May.

Day 3 Wengen & Grindelwald.

The train journey was great, but both villages were far too touristy and skiing orientated for us. And Wengen has nothing on Mürren for location, views or ambiance.

Day 4 The Jungfraujoch.

At 8 am it looked ok on top from the cameras in Lauterbrunnen, so we went for it. What a fantastic experience; -15 oC and perfect weather conditions until about 1PM when the clouds came in. Worth every single one of those CHF 89 for the roundtrip journey on our 'Good Morning' tickets. Travelers should note that the SwissPass entitle you to free passage to Wengen from Mürren; from there you need to get off the train and buy your 'Good Morning' ticket. Had we known at the time one could do this, we would have bought our ticket from Wengen to Jungfraujoch and return at Mürren before we left.

Day 5 Luzern.

Another beautiful three hour train journey and a lovely city. Highly recommended for a day, especially the Picasso Museum & the walk round the Old Town walls.

Day 6 The Schilthorn

Again, fantastically clear conditions and amazing views. We looked a bit silly when we forgot to change cable-cars at Birg, though!

Day 7 On to Geneva.

Sadly, we had to leave the mountains to be in Geneva for our return flight home the next day. We didn't want to go!

Special mention must go to Tham's Snacks & Drinks which was so good we went twice! Tham and his charming wife are full of chat and we had two great meals there.

The Edelweiss restaurant does an 'all you can eat' pasta night on Thursdays with a choice of 10 sauces & plenty for vegetarian options, so Rebecca was more than satisfied! The pizzas are pretty good, too, although Rebecca was surprised when her mixed vegetable pizza arrived topped with carrots, peas & beans!

The Stägerstubli was good, but we ate far too much fondue and only have ourselves to blame! You'll not go hungry in Mürren!

Ed, you were right when you told us there would be plenty to do in the mountains, even for non-skiers. We could have stayed much longer and did not want to make that final tearful journey from Mürren down to Lauterbrunnen!

We found The Rough Guide To Switzerland & The Lonely Planet Switzerland very useful

Hopefully, we'll be back to see what it's like in the Spring. Thanks again, and happy travels!
