The
Big Cities
ou're likely to enter or leave the
country through Zürich. Consider at least a short stay. Many claim to find Zürich dull.
We find great shopping and food, a few good sights, a fine lake, and a good base for day
trips.
Fine (and
expensive) restaurants abound. The five-star hotels are among the best in the world, and
one or more of the smaller four-star hotels is among the best in its class you're likely
ever to see. (Our recommendations)
or us, there's
much to see and recommend in and around this city.
Zürich is a central point for train services
allowing one-day excursions almost anywhere in the country. Luzern and Bern are only 75
minutes away. The Rhein, the medieval village of Stein and the Rhein Falls are a short
distance away. The city itself has a fine lake, an intersting 'old town' and some of the
best shopping in the entire world.
Visitors, including travelers
with long connections at the airport or train station, will find profitable and enjoyable
ways to spend their spare time in A Quick Visit to Zürich.
 fter the mountains, Luzern's a
second favorite for many. You can skim it in two hours, but it really deserves more time.
And it makes an excellent base for delightful excursions nearby and beyond.
Main sites in the city include
the Kappelbrücke, the Lion Monument and, for many, the National Transport Museum.
The marvelous lake and nearby mountains are easily reached by tram, boat or train. The
outstanding Swiss rail system makes train excursions to places like the Jungfrau region,
Murten, Fribourg/Freiburg, Avenches, Zürich and Gruyeres quite feasible as day
trips.
he famous
Kappelbrücke, dating from the early 1400s, had been the medieval original until early
1994 when careless workmen destroyed it by fire in 1993. The determined Swiss rebuilt it
within several months. There's also a 'newer' covered bridge, the Spreuerbrücke, dating
from 1408.
