Thanks so much for this wonderful site, which I found using Metacrawler. It's exactly what I was looking for: information about Rome from travelers who love it.

I have been to England twice and will be traveling to London and Rome (first time, very excited!) around New Year's, and so much on the site echoes the perspective formed on those trips (I'll never forget the time we were in the National Gallery gift shop and heard a very large man in a Stetson loudly drawl, "Y'all got any t-shirts?" at one of the clerks) that I've bookmarked the site and intend to send the link to my fellow travelers.

Thanks for the 'insider' information. I feel as though very good friends of mine had kindly given me the benefit of their experience. I'm only sorry that we'll be there just a few days!

A Near-perfect Guidebook!

Even to a seasoned European traveller, your comments and suggestions are very useful. Common sense, field-based analysis corrected and enhanced by years of experience, a timeless and refreshing approach, and just enough deference to the powers that be. It's the recipe for a near-perfect guidebook!!

Just About Equals the Official Tourist Board Site

Date: July 14, 2000
From: Leggett, Dave dleggett@tycoelectronics.com

I'm in the middle of viewing your website and just thought I'd drop you a line to say how impressed I am. I'm an English guy living/working in Belgium. My Mum's Swiss (living in England) and I've been to Switzerland nearly every year of my life.

My knowledge of the country is considerable.  However, reading through your website I realise that I still have some things to discover. I'm going there AGAIN, in three weeks time, and some of the information from your website will be very useful indeed.

Obviously, going in three weeks, I'm busy on the internet and for someone like myself, who knows the country so well, it is absolutely brilliant to come across such a well presented and informative site. I could even have my arm twisted to say it just about equals the official Tourist board site.

The Aussies in Europe ... Nine Weeks or Bust!

Date: July 12, 2000
From:
Artworks

Our whirlwind tour of Europe (the Aussies on 9 weeks or bust) was amazing. Went to a lot of your suggested places, where many proved to be highlights when looking back on the trip. Couldn't stay at your recommended B&B in Mürren - she was booked out but stayed in the valley, in a chalet, which was great.

Switzerland is amazingly beautiful - it was one of only two places in which we spent more than one night (with the exception of the major cities). The Schiltorn cable was great - thankfully the weather was fairly clear (if a little grey).

On the basis of your site information, we also ventured into Bavaria, going to Neuschwanstein Castle which was made all the more exciting by the fact that it was snowing the day we went there!

Rome proved to be our favourite city. We absolutely adored it. My tip for here was to get a hotel as centrally located as possible. Ours was and we were able to walk everywhere!

Could go on and on! but must say thanks and thanks again for some very practical yet enriching advice! Your site proved to be a Godsend. cheers Shirley Nicholls

Trip Budgeting

Thanks so much for your help! I used your suggestions and the spreadsheet method, did a budget and I think I've come up with numbers I feel comfortable with. It's just me and my three teens. I don't know if I'm crazy to do this on my own, but I'm very excited about going. Thanks again.

I am leaving for my first European vacation on June 14, 2000. I have been looking for answers on what to pack, what forms of currency to take, etc for months. Travelling with Ed and Julie is by far the best I have found and it actually answered all of my questions. Thank-you very much, Ed & Julie.

Your website is one of my favorites. The information you have provided about the old mining camps is fascinating. I look forward to traveling to Ouray every summer, and each time I have something new to search for, thanks to your website. You are doing a great job. Keep up the good work.

I'll be using this site a lot in the next few weeks as I get ready for an upcoming trip to Europe. I really like the relevance of the site: It's not about pushing a particular product, but providing necessary, down-to-earth, easy-to-understand information that really helps a novice traveler like me.

Rome Walks

From: Allan Varian apvarian@earthlink.net

Kudos and mille grazie to you both for your walking tours of Rome. We followed Ancient Rome and it was both accurate and informative. We loved it. Thanks again!

A tip for others: in the Forum (or anywhere else, we guess), if you see something that's not covered, "attach" yourself to a group with an English-speaking guide to find out what you're looking at.

[This tip will work, though it might garner some stares. If you try it, limit yourself to 'that' sight. It's really unfair to those who've paid for a tour for you to tag on for free.]

A Short Visit to Switzerland

Date:May 16, 2000 8:30 AM
From: Ling
clsia@cyberway.com.sg

Yes! This is the website that I've been searching high and low for.

With only about 7 days of vacation, my friend & I really wish to have a "sampling" of what Switzerland has to offer. I was tempted to go for the "1-day in Zurich, 1-day in Bern, 2-days here, 2-days there" kind of stuff. But after going through your recommendations for people who had only have a few days to spare, it really make sense to just go and experience fully the unique features of this country.

Thanks for this wonderful tip! I hope my short vacation in July will truly be an unforgettable one!!!!

Dear Ed & Julie:
Your site address was sent to our Italian Genealogy site by a member. You have a wealth of information, which is very informative. I will be back time and time again. This is the best travel info site, I have been to. Thanks a lot for all the information. It is just marvelous! I am in awe! I have been to Rome twice and I plan to return again. Thank you very much.

Wouldn't It Be Nice If?

Date: April 16, 2000 10:23 AM
From:
the4aces@erols.com

It would be nice to have a listing with the times of all the museums. Example, Monday I know many are closed. some few are opened at odd times. If I could go to a page and see every day what the schedule is for main attraction I could plan the little time I have around the hours. If this was a site of its own I wouldn't need to go from place to place to get the information. That would be great. Thanks!

[As they say in advertising, "Due to popular demand ..." ... we've added a page listing visiting hours for major Rome attractions. Thanks for the suggestion to 'the4aces'.]

Rome

From: Ed Wilson EWilson648@aol.com

I just stumbled upon your web site while trying to find some information for friends concerning Roma. What a delight! I served at the embassy in Roma from '73-'76, met my wife at Santa Susanna, and together we've visited Italy (usually to include Roma) some 42 or 43 times since. We love the city, the country, the culture, the food, the wine ... need I go on?

Congratulations on a wonderful site. Keep up the good work.

Thank You!

Yours is truly one of the best websites for travelers I have ever seen, and I intend to visit again and again.  Your information logically follows the flow of my questions, and the links are well-placed and on-target.  I am an experienced business traveler in the U.S., but have been to Europe only once before.  I am now planning a trip to Rome, and your website will definitely help me make the most of the experience.

This is obviously a labor of love for you two -- thanks again for sharing your expertise in such a charming, informative manner.

[All comments appreciated, especially compliments. But we've worked hard to make the flow as logical as we can, and the links as useful as possible, so we doubly appreciate this note. If you find something illogical, or a link you think should be added, please let us know so we can make the site even more useful in the future.]

Fantastic Website

Larry and Mary Handley

Hi,  Fantastic website - you should have a big "CAUTION - entering this website can cause you to spend half a day and ignore all other things in your life!!"  Fortunately, we found it well in advance of our trip - October.  Will be able to give you feedback about escorted tours vs. do-it-yourself.  We are going for a week with Tauck Tours for all the reasons you indicate.

Thanks again for providing all the information (and distractions like the comments on Murren in Switzerland - haven't gone to Italy yet and now want to go to Switzerland!!)

Swiss Regional Pass Prices

Date: December 26, 1999 1:57pm
From: Mary ROADA@webtv.net

I noticed in your information on the BOR Pass that you indicate it gives a 50% discount for the Murren-Schilthorn and other portions now and is a better pass because it has been changed to 50%. However, Rick Steves has this listed as still being just 25% with his 1999/2000 prices.  We are going to be spending 5 days in Interlaken in May and hope to use either this pass or the Swiss Pass to see the surrounding mountain areas on day trips from Interlaken. If the BOR is now 50% it seems to be a better Pass for our needs for 5 days than the Swiss Pass. Would you let me know if your information is correct for the BOR? Could you also let me know if the BOR Pass covers the postal buses also? Thank you so much for your help.

[We checked with the Swiss railroads directly and confirmed to Mary the TWEnJ prices and condtions were correct. Steves is one of our icons, but like everyone else, can't be right all the time.]

To which Mary wrote, "Kudos to you and Julie for having the correct info on your site!"

I absolutely love your website. It's a 9, but it could be a 10 if there was something about Spain... personal opinion. :-) There is so much helpful information for the traveler. What fun discovering your WONDERFUL web site on the Internet.   It's like a personal letter from a friend.  I've already book marked for easy reference.

There is so much information - it's best to take it in tiny pieces.  quite like a child in a candy store - a bit overwhelming, but oh so delicious!

You both are so generous with your time, knowledge, insights and enthusiasm for travel.  We so appreciate your efforts.

AT LAST!!!--useable information!! Thank you soooo very much. My husb. and I are missionaries working in E. Africa. Our home is in Mombasa, Kenya. We are heading to US this July and so decided we would stop for 4 days in Rome as a special treat for our family.

We've found very little info about traveling in Europe from local travel agents. So we signed up for internet and I've been gleaning all I can from the web. Your site has been a gold-mine!!! I appreciate all your time and practical, down-to-earth tips. A couple of questions about our trip to Rome:

[Which we were very happy to answer]

Again, thank you for your wonderful and practical website.

Like a Triple-A Truck

I just had to send a note and thank you for your wonderful web site! My family (about 40 of us!) are  planning a European trip this summer to celebrate my parents' 50th wedding anniversary, and I have spent dozens of hours exploring literally hundreds of web sites regarding travel tips, information on places we'll be visiting, etc. For many of us, this will be our first trip to Europe and we have had no idea what to expect.

Finding your web site was like being stranded on the highway and seeeing the AAA truck pull up! I have visited it many times over the past couple of months and am constantly amazed at the wealth of information you provide, just there for the reading. All of our group have Internet access and I have passed your links along to all of them. We have all enjoyed the commentary and learned much of what we think we'll need to know from your experiences.

So on those days when you wonder if maintaining your site is really worth the time and trouble, please rest assured that you have reached out and touched many strangers who are very grateful for your efforts.

Thank you!

I have been looking for information and tips on traveling to Rome for a good while. I felt like I won the lottery after skimming Ed and Julie's travel guide. I don't know where you find the time to write down all of your thoughts and tips, but thank you so much. You have saved me countless hours of planning. I will definitely be a frequent visitor in the future. Thanks again,

Natalie Nisbet
